Digital Imaging & Exams
See the full picture of your oral health.
A healthy smile starts with more than what we can see. Digital imaging and comprehensive dental exams allow us to look closely at your teeth, gums, jaw, and surrounding structures to identify concerns early — sometimes before you notice any symptoms.
Using modern digital technology alongside a thorough clinical examination, we can get a clearer picture of your oral health and make informed recommendations based on what we find.
Why Digital Imaging & Exams Matter
Regular exams help us monitor changes over time and catch potential problems before they become more complicated. Digital imaging gives us another perspective, allowing us to see areas that aren’t visible during a visual examination alone.
Together, they help us:
- Detect problems early — Identify cavities, bone loss, infections, and other concerns before they cause noticeable symptoms.
- Look beyond the surface — Digital images can reveal what’s happening between teeth, below the gumline, and around the roots.
- Monitor your oral health — Comparing images over time helps us recognize changes and track areas that need attention.
- Evaluate your teeth and supporting structures — Exams allow us to assess your teeth, gums, bite, jaw, and overall oral health.
- Plan treatment more precisely — Clear diagnostic images can help us determine the most appropriate treatment when a problem is identified.
- Create a more complete picture — Combining digital imaging with an in-person exam gives us a better understanding of your individual needs.
Frequently Asked Questions About Digital Imaging & Exams
What can I expect for an exam?
Your exam begins with a thorough evaluation of your teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health. Depending on your needs, we may take digital X-rays or other images to examine areas that can’t be fully evaluated during a visual exam.
We don’t recommend every type of image at every visit. Imaging is selected based on your dental history, current oral health, symptoms, age, and individual needs. Our goal is to use the information that is appropriate for you while avoiding unnecessary imaging.
How often do I need an exam?
The recommended frequency of dental exams depends on your individual oral health, dental history, risk factors, and treatment needs. Some patients may need more frequent monitoring, while others may require less frequent visits.
Regular exams give us the opportunity to identify changes early rather than waiting until a problem becomes painful or more difficult to treat.
Are digital x-rays safe?
Digital X-rays use a very small amount of radiation. We take appropriate precautions and only recommend imaging when it is clinically appropriate for your individual needs.
What if you find a problem?
If we identify an area that needs attention, we’ll explain what we’re seeing, discuss your options, and help you understand the next steps. Our goal is to make sure you have the information you need to make an informed decision about your care.
